What made me want to start the DCC: I saw a lack of opportunities for women in the profession to truly connect with one another. I credit a great deal of my success to the wisdom and guidance of others and want to ensure all women feel seen and heard. I feel having a strong support system is vital to a happy and successful career in death care.

What made me want to start the DCC: Last fall I took a certification in Women in Leadership at Gonzaga University. The reoccurring theme was more often then not women lack confidence not competence. The second thing was women were over mentored but did not have enough Sponsors who created meaningful paths and opportunities so they could grow career wise. I think organizations still have a long way to go in giving women more seats in Senior Leadership that actually make decisions for companies. We need to peek behind the curtains and see how many women, specifically women of color who actually occupy the C Suites. I want to see real change and the only way to make that happen is to get involved. Do companies really mean it when they say they believe in equality? Take a look at your company’s C-Suite. Who is sitting in the top seats?

What made me want to start the DCC: I was drawn to help start the DCC after feeling a lack of support and mentorship in my early years in the industry. I understand how easy it can be to feel alone and isolated in our respective jobs, but I love the wonderful and amazing community that exists in the death care sphere. I want to help others connect and feel supported as they find their ideal place.

What made me want to start the DCC: Women supporting women is empowering and it’s our responsibility. The DCC is an opportunity for me to grow both personally and professionally. It’s also a place where I can give back and help women rise in our industry. Besides, who doesn’t want to be a part of a girl gang!

What made me want to start the DCC: Covid really changed the way we communicated and gathered. I truly missed people I saw in person often. That quickly developed into other possible connections with people I missed out on meeting. Our first few zoom calls together made me appreciate being surrounded by strong, thoughtful, and encouraging women. People who only want what’s best for you. I knew we had a very unique opportunity to gather other strong, encouraging leaders. Just the thought of bringing together women from all walks of life and experiences in one place to share wisdom and grow would be incredible.

What made me want to start the DCC: As I has been navigating changes in my career over the past few years, I benefited from the support, guidance, encouragement and most importantly sponsorship from others. One of the things that stood out to me was that women in the death care space lack opportunities and access to safe spaces to have the types of conversations I was having and I wanted to be able to help provide that environment for others.

What made me want to start the DCC: As we see more and more women emerging into death care, I recognized a need for positive uplifting support within death care. To be able to offer support to those coming into the profession is a space we can help fill through the DCC. Offering a place to be seen and heard.
